[GiDlist] TCL GiD_Process Mesh structured Lines
Send by: Abel Coll Dear Zhao,
I think the problem may be that you are not assigning the number of cells to
the lines of the surface:
when you select Mesh->Structured Surfaces->Assign number of cells (or Assign
Sizes), you select the surfaces, and then a window appears asking for the
number of cells (or size) to be assigned to the lines of that surfaces. If
you assign the number of cells to the lines (by entering the number,
clicking on ok and selecting the lines), it should work like you expect. If
you close that window without assigning any size, the size assigned to that
lines when generating the mesh will be the general mesh size assigned to the
model (the one entered in the window that appears after selecting
Mesh->Generate Mesh).
Regards,
ABEL

Send by: Shriram Hello, There is an option for snapping to grid which can be enabled/disabled which is fine. However, in addition is it possible to snap to existing points (with the grid snap on)? The problem arises because when the snap to grid is enabled, it is not possible to snap to an already existing point which is needed to close a figure or continue drawing on a figure. With grid snap enabled, GiD snaps only to the grid every time and not to the points which is making difficult to use the snaps when we need to select existing points. Is there a way to overcome this? Pasenau de Riera Hi, seems to be a problem with the edges of the elements ¿the element lines were visualized on the screen? ¿have you tried with the screen ps/eps ( Files --> Print to file --> PS/EPS Screen ...)? You can control the resolution of the image embedded in the ps file in the 'Files --> Page and capture settings ...' window under 'Resolution' (...) i've been doing some tests and although the white lines appear in the ps, when you send it to the printer these white lines do not appear. i agree with you that these lines are ugly to see in the screen. seems to be a rounding problem between elements parts. The conclusion is that the vectorial ps/eps algorithm needs some rework and cannot be quick fixed. Thanks for the info. Miguel Pasenau -----Mensaje original----- De: ... Send by: Jose Munoz Hi Miguel, Many thanks for your answer. The element lines where not visualised on the screen (Style=Body). [GiDlist] Problem meshing a model
Send by: Lawrence Seddon Hi All, I am using the professional copy of GID v10.0.3 to generate a mesh for a problem I am studying. I'm new to GID so I'm not that expert using it and I am encountering problems with the mesh file that I generate after I specify my model. The model is relatively simple. I have a cube of sides 3 units centred at the origin. Within the cube is a sphere of radius 2 units also centred at the origin. The cube is filled with a certain type of material up to the boundary of the sphere. The sphere is filled with a second type of material. So I have a sphere with one type of material completely surrounded by a cube filled with a different type of material. The problem I'm having concerns the mesh file .msh. After I construct my model, specify the material regions and boundary conditions and mesh the objects, I write out the resultant mesh to a .msh file. Most of the tetrahedra have a material number that corresponds to either the sphere (material number 4) or the volume between the cube surface and the surface of the sphere (material number 36). However, on closer inspection of the mesh file I find that in the list of tetrahedral elements that describe the mesh some of the tetrahedral elements are written to the file with no associated material number. A superficial inspection of the tetrahedra with missing material numbers indicates that they lie within the sphere. The problem is that the mesh file is fed into a finite element solver and the finite element solver can't process the file correctly because of the missing material info. I suspect that the elements which do not have a material label ought not to be there at all? I've tried GID v7.2 and I have the same problem using that version. I am worried that I am doing something wrong. Can you help or can you suggest some course of action that might help identify where I am going wrong ? Thank you, Lawrence Seddon ... [GiDlist] Problem meshing a model
Send by: Enrique Escolano It seems that your model is wrong, because it doesn't represent what you want. You must create a sheperical hole in the box, and this hole is filled with the sphere volume, else the box and the sphere are overlapped!! To create the hole Geometry->Edit->Hole volume then select the box volume and the the other volume of the sphere (that will be sustracted of the first one) Then you will have only a single volume (a holed box), and you need to create the second volume of the sphere, to do it: Geomety->Create->Volume->By contour and select the sphere surfaces. Then apply again the materials, conditions, generate the mesh and calculate. Regards Enrique Escolano ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lawrence Seddon" <... [GiDlist] Problem meshing a model
Send by: Lawrence Seddon Hi Enrique, Thank you for your response :) I have taken the model I started with and deleted the mesh and material descriptions. I select Geometry->Edit->Hole Volume. I click the Hole Volume option and it allows me to select the Outside volume (the cube) which turns grey when highlighted, and the Interior volume (the sphere) which turns red when highlighted. I then press escape and the software reports that it has *added 1 hole to volume 1*. I hit escape again. I then select Geometry->Create->Volume->By Contour and select the sphere surfaces and then I hit escape and the software reports that it has *created 1 new volume*. I then go on to assign my materials. I select the surfaces on the boundary of the cube and assign the material types I want for the cube surfaces. I then select the material I want for the volume between the cube surface and the outer surface of the sphere. I click on the cube volume. The sphere and cube volume contours turn red. I click finish and move on to define the material for the sphere itself . When I try to select the sphere to assign a material the sphere and the cube volumes turn red simultaneously once again which really doesn't look right to me. I expected to be able to select the sphere and assign a material number to the sphere. When I do Utilities->List->Volumes and try to get a list of volumes in the model there only appears to be the cube with the hole in it. It still doesn't seem to be doing what I want am I missing a step somewhere ? Regards, Lawrence Enrique Escolano wrote: >... [GiDlist] Problem meshing a model
Send by: Enrique Escolano I seems that you have created well both volumes, but I am not sure, your explanations seems contradictory: You must have two volumes. How many volumes do you have listing all? By default, when do you have a volume only its tetrahedra volume mesh elements will be generated, not the surface or lines elements (you can explicitly force to be meshed with Mesh->Mesh criteria->Mesh) Then you only need to assign material to the volumes, not to surfaces (except if you force them to be also meshed with triangles) !! Note: in 'normal render' a volume is represented by its lines in cyan color and a little scaled to the interior. When it is selected this lines are shown in red. I think that you must read the tutorials of the user manual (... [GiDlist] automated response

Send by: Enrique Escolano If you change only the values of the materials , remeshing is not necessary, because the entities will point to the same updated material, but if you change the conditions applied to the geometry it is necessary to remesh to have the new conditions applied over the mesh (you can apply also directly conditions to the mesh, but is is unrecommended, and probably the selection will be very difficult) If your problemtype were created using the 'compass toolkit', the conditions are applied over 'groups', and it is possible to change some condition values without need to create again the mesh, because the 'groups of the mesh' remain unchanged Regards Enrique ----- Original Message ----- From: 淑红 To: ... Why does it make no difference? The file that I import in should be considered ad the new mesh, isn't it? Hoping for your reply. Regards. Shuhong Tan --- 11年3月9日,周三, ... [GiDlist] Re: Boundary condition
Send by: Enrique Escolano I tink that the problem is that you have applied the conditions directly to the mesh, not? Why don't you apply the conditions to the geometry? This is the 'normal way' Then if you change conditions on the geometry you must only remesh and all will be automatically applied over the new mesh. Exporting the mesh you will only export nodes and elements, but not values of applied conditions. Reimporting this mesh you will lost this attached data. Don't use this approach!! The 'Compass toolkit' is used by the Ls-dyna problemtype for example. http://www.compassis.com/compass/en/Productos/CompassLIB... [GiDlist] Re: Boundary condition

[GiDlist] boundary condition
Send by: 淑红 Hello,
I do apply the condition to the geometry. When changing the condition, I'd like to keep the mesh unchanged.
In my opinion, the meh information is nodes and elements. If I export the mesh file, and I reimporting this mesh after changing the condition, it should be another way to generate the mesh, and then the new conditions should be applied over the new mesh that I import in.
As for the 'Compass toolkit', is there some way to use it in a existing problemtype. Actually, we have our own problemtype used for our project.

[GiDlist] boundary condition
Send by: Enrique Escolano What mean to keep the mesh unchanged? if you remesh again with the same geometry and meshing parameters you will obtain the same mesh!! which is the problem apart of the time spent in this mesh generation? This remeshing is compulsory (with a 'non Compass toolkit' problemtype) if you change conditions applied to geometry, because the last step of the mesh generation is the automatic assignation of data from geometry to the mesh entities. Importing only a mesh it is not possible to automatically transfer data from geometry, because the relationship between elements and source geometric entities is unknown!! To use the 'Compass toolkit' is necessary completely re-write the problemtype, it is a different approach. Regards Enrique ----- Original Message ----- From: 淑红 To: ... [GiDlist] Consistent mesh ???
Send by: V M Ngoc Dear everybody,
I currently in third years of PhD student on the subject "Modelling of fluid
flow in fractured porous media " and I use GiD as the part pre-processing and
post-processing in my work.
The fractures are considered as circles of zero-thickness in 3D infinite space
which can intersect together. My problem is generator of mesh on the surface of
set of fractures but the mesh must be consistent i.e. it takes into account the
intersection between the fractures.
For this work in the case of small number of fractures, i can performce by hands
with GiD (you could see the procedure in attached files), but for a large number
of fractures, It is necessary to have a automatical procedure.
In addition, I can use very well Autocad, and VBA for AutoCad.
Could you show me that how to use GiD to resolve this problem. Or Could you give
me some advises to resolve this problem, plesase?
Thank you in advances

[GiDlist] Format of batch file (*.bch) for arcline and NURBS Surface
Send by: Enrique Escolano The batch file, is a text file with the set of GiD commands used to do the operations. To know the syntax o the batch commands, for example you can do the operations as user, and then use the Undo window (Utilities->Undo <ctrl-z>) to see which are the GiD words internally used. You can also write a '.geo' GiD ASCII file with the exact geometry you want, the format of this geometry file was explained in this document of an old course http://www.gidhome.com/images/news/gidconf/2004/courses/12-Geometry%20GiD%20format.pdf And it is possible to create also GiD entities at Tcl scripting programming level, with the GiD_Geometry command (see help on GiD customization->Tcl/Tk extension->Control funcions->Special functions->Geometry) and with the GiD_Process Tcl command that send commands like the batch ones to be done by GiD) Regards Enrique Escolano ----- Original Message ----- From: V M Ngoc To: ... Send by: Zenker, Dr. Matthias Hi, I am new to GiD, evaluating it at the moment. I want to make a mesh for the attached geometry (in Parasolid format, we are using Solidworks) which has 2 bodies, one partially inside the other. So far, I did not succeed in preserving the interface in the mesh. GiD seems to make just a volume mesh so that I have a unique body with one boundary at the end. But I need to have 2 bodies and a boundary between them for the FEM simulation. Can GiD do this kind of things, and if so, how do I achieve it? A hint on how to proceed would be most welcome. Send by: Enrique Escolano 3D meshing problem with inner surfaceThe volumes become connected, because by default a collapse is automatically invoked after the import, and the surfaces of both volumes were joined (and a single surface is shared by both volumes). You can disable it by setting: Utilities->Preferences... Exchange, and unselect the 'Automatic collapse after import' Note: a 'repair' is automatically invoked also, in this case if you disable the collapse, can do the repair to fix some problem with 'Utilities->Repair Model", else some surfaces can't be rendered and probably meshed. The collapse can be also manually invoked with Geometry->Edit->Collapse->Model If the volumes were already joined, you can separate them using Geometry->Edit->Uncollapse->Volumes then the common entities (surfaces, lines and points) will be duplicated to have each volume its own entity Regards Enrique Escolano ----- Original Message ----- From: Zenker, Dr. Matthias To: ... Send by: Zenker, Dr. Matthias Hi, thank you for your answer. I now can see that my mesh has boundaries with Mesh->View Mesh boundary. But when I export the mesh using the .unv template, and open it with ElmerGUI, there still is only one boundary, i.e. the outer surface of the geometry. What can I do to have all the surfaces initially present in the geometry as separate boundaries, so that I can assign boundary conditions in Elmer? Thank you for more helpful hints. Send by: Enrique Escolano Re: [GiDlist] 3D meshing problem with inner surfaceMaybe this is a kind of graphical mistake using ElmerGUI and do you really have separated boundaries, or Elmer did some kind of nodes collapse when importing the .unv written by GiD. If do you have in GiD geometry for two volumes 'duplicated- non shared surfaces', then when meshing you will have non-shared nodes (you can see it as you said showing mesh boundaries) and when exporting this mesh with the .unv template you will maintain this topology. Send by: Zenker, Dr. Matthias Thank you for the answer. I now understand (also after reading http://www.csc.fi/english/pages/elmer/download/elmer_gid_3d.txt) that I must assign a surface constraint to every surface if I want them as separate boundaries in the final mesh. I have tried to do that, however since my geometry contains more than just a few surfaces, it is rather tedious to select them all one after the other with the mouse to assign surface constraints. Is there a possibility to (automatically) assign surface constraints (with different indexes!) to all surfaces in the model? Is there something like a geometry explorer, listing all surfaces and bodies of a geometry, where I could do this kind of assignment (or at least see the structure of the geometry)? Modeobver, if I select some surfaces and assign them surface constraints, it seems that GiD does not merge the nodes at the interface between the two bodies. Is it possible to do that, and how? This is the crucial point for the decision whether or not we will buy this software... Send by: Enrique Escolano Re: [GiDlist] 3D meshing problem with inner surfaceWhy is so tedious to assign conditions to the geometric surfaces? how many surfaces do you have? There are different ways to select entities, and for example separate them by layers to aid view and selection. Usually it is possible to select parts from different points of view, or connected tangent entities, or using some entity selection filters. you can select all entities writting 1:end or 1: and you can automatize some condition assignation from Tcl scripting language. The 'structure of the geometry' could be the layers not? About to 'merge notes' , the topology of the geometry is strictily preserved for the mesh. If do you have joined geometric entities you will have joined mesh entities. If you don't have the geometry you want, then you must modify the geometry, joining or separating as you solver or Elmer requires. Send by: Zenker, Dr. Matthias Hi, I still have problems with meshing a geometry with several bodies in 3D. I have (with some helpful hints from Mark Smith, thank you very much!) successfully generated a conformal mesh for the first test geometry in the attachment (Baugruppe1.x_t) and verified (with Elmer) that heat passes from one body to the other. Now my "real" geometry (which I cannot post here) has small overlaps between the bodies for technical reasons. So I asked my colleagues from the construction department to create a test geometry with a small overlap. It is also attached (Baugruppe1_overlap.x_t). I generated a mesh in the same way, but this time, it was not conformal between the two bodies: heat did not flow uniformingly through the interface. Even worse: when I import my "real" geometry (it has more bodies and is more complicated than the test geometries), GiD crashes. Any idea what can be done here? Send by: Enrique Escolano 3D meshing problem with inner surface and overlapInitially your x_t volumes are completelly independent of each other, they don't share any surface. if you import with the 'Automatic collapse after import' option unselected, then do you have this case (it is then recommended to do a 'Utilities->Repair to fix some possible import problems) If do you want to connect this volumes, by sharing surfaces (e.g. then heat can pass between bodies) then you must join them manually: e.g. deleting one of the surfaces (first volume must be deleted) and using only one for both volumes To aid you in this task, it exists the 'collapse' tool, that join points close than a tolerance. This tolerance must be set (in Utilities->Preferences-Exchange - Import tolernace) by the user depending on the model accuracy, but once again, to aid the user we provide the 'Automatic tolerance' option (that get as tolernace a percent of the model size) If this automatic tolerance is not appropiated for your model, you can set other (and do global or local collapse selecting some part) in your example Baugruppe1_overlap.x_t, there are points with gap about 0.00035 units (and the automatic tolerance is about 3e-6) then this gap won't be closed with this tolerance. If you set a tolerance 0.0005 and collapse again, then all 'required' surfaces are joined as you want. You must be carful with the collapse tolerance, only 'small tolerances' must be used, else the geometry could be corrupted (the curves won't be on the surfaces with precision, etc) And maybe some case can't be joined by the collapse, then you must manually modify the geometry to have exactly what you want to simulate. Send by: Enrique Escolano Edges are not stored splicitly inside GiD, and is not possible to directly get this information (e.g. with .bas template commands)
You must do something to recover this information from the Element-to-node information that GiD store.
at Tcl level, you can use for example an auxilary array to assign an edge_id to all edges, without repetition (na:nb must be considered equal to nb:na)
You can create a problemtype with a <problemtype>.tcl file with this code (or invoke this Tcl from a macro)
proc GetEdgeKey { n0 n1 } {
if { $n0 < $n1 } {
set key "$n0 $n1"
} else {
set key "$n1 $n0"
}
return $key
}
proc GetEdgesInformation { } {
#store all edges witout repetition in the array named Edges
set edges(Tetrahedra) { {0 1} {1 2} 2 0} {0 3} {1 3} {2 3}}
set elementtype Tetrahedra
foreach element [GiD_Info Mesh Elements $elementtype -sublist] {
set nodes [lrange $element 1 end-1]
foreach edge $edges($elementtype) {
set n0 [lindex $nodes [lindex $edge 0]]
set n1 [lindex $nodes [lindex $edge 1]]
set key [GetEdgeKey $n0 $n1]
set Edges($key) 1
}
}
#assign an id to each edge
set count 0
foreach key [array names Edges] {
incr count
set Edges($key) $count
}
#return the information you want
set res "Element-to-edge:
"
foreach element [GiD_Info Mesh Elements $elementtype -sublist] {
set nodes [lrange $element 1 end-1]
foreach edge $edges($elementtype) {
set n0 [lindex $nodes [lindex $edge 0]]
set n1 [lindex $nodes [lindex $edge 1]]
set key [GetEdgeKey $n0 $n1]
append res "[lindex $element 0] $Edges($key)
"
}
}
append res "Edge-to-node:
"
foreach key [array names Edges] {
append res "$Edges($key) $key
"
}
result $res
}
and then print the information returned by GetEdgesInformation to the calculation file invoking in the <problemtype>.bas file this tcl procedure
with
*tcl(GetEdgesInformation)
Note that I wrote a procedure considering only linear Tetrahedra, you must modify it to take into account other kind of elements
and I didn't tested it, maybe there is some small error that you must fix.
Tcl is an standard scripting language, and you can find a lot of information of its syntax at Internet.
The GiD_Info is an special GiD-Tcl command to get GiD mesh information, you can see its syntax at the GiD Help - customization - Tcl/Tk extension

because this solver wants also this kind of mesh additionally to the surface and volume mesh.

and this GiD-Tcl event procedure is automatically invoked by GiD just before the mesh generation.

Solved!
Thank you. I hadn't tried this, because it is an option (mesh lines) which I never use, and I asumed that it is set to "no mesh" by default. The problem must have been that my model is based in another created by someone else. Anyway, thanks.

[GiDlist] Elementsets
Send by: Steffen Rothe Dear all, we want to create elementsets with GiD. Elementset for us mean all elements with the same element type and the same material belong to one set. Now I want to know if it's possible to sort the elements by their type and material in ascending order for example? Is it possible in GiD to renumber the elements or in the bas file to sort the elements? Another question is: If I call a tcl procedure in the .bas file, can I execute a loop over all elements in the tcl procedure or transfer any properties of the elements like the material and element type to the procedure? Thanks Steffen [GiDlist] Elementsets
Send by: Enrique Escolano you can do a loop on the (applied) materials, and inside this loop another loop on the elements and write only the elements with material equal to the loop one
*loop materials
*loop elements
*if(elemsmat==matnum)
*elemsnum *elemsconec *elemsmat
*endif
*end elements
*end materials
In a call to a tcl procedure in the .bas you can provide some parameter, like the the material number:
*loop materials
*tcl(your_procedure *matnum)
*end materials
and in some tcl file define this procedure:
proc your_procedure { num } {
}
and from Tcl you can ask GiD to get the information you want (elements, etc), with special GiD Tcl commands, like GiD_Info or GiD_Mesh,
and reorder as you want (invoked from the .bas the returned string it directly printed to the calculation file)

Lo mejor de hecho es que recargues el problemtype sin transform, para eliminar todos los datos aplicados, y los reapliques de cero, para no tener ningún posible 'residuo' de condiciones antiguas. Send by: Smith, Mark Hi GiD team I have been repeatedly meshing a solid with normal tetrahedral elements with a fixed element size and the identical meshing parameters set in the utilities:meshing and get wildly different mesh quality (minimum dihedral angle) results for the mesh. The results of 12 meshing runs gave me the following results for the minimum dihedral angle (smallest i.e. angle from) all in degrees. 1.35, 5.38, 1.31, 1.01, 3 wrong volumes, 13.7, 8.33, 3 wrong volumes, 6.78, 1 wrong volume, 7.98, 2.18 The largest angle was always the same at 70.5°. Repeating the test with quadratic tetrahedral elements gave the following results 9.76, 1.31, 3.33, 3.9, gid encountered a problem & needs to close, 5.19, 2.83, 0.887, 1.73, 5.1, 1.36, 3.58 Again the largest angle was always the same at 70.5°. Is this as expected? Prior to this series of tests I had assumed when I got the error message "wrong volumes" that there was something wrong with my model or my selection of mesh size but now I know this is not the case. It appears that the meshing routine has an element of randomness and not wholly deterministic otherwise I would get the same mesh each and every time I pressed the mesh button? If I want the best quality mesh is there any other way other than repeatedly meshing & inspecting the quality until I get one that I'm happy with? as this can be a highly time consuming activity. Send by: Enrique Escolano In general is not possible to do this in an automatic way. Depending on how the cloud of points is, you could try different approaches. I recommend you that if it is possible you create by hand (connecting some points) a net of appropiated curves that define the shape, and then create the surfaces by the boundary of this lines. e.g. you can use Geometry->Create->NURBS surface->By points to create some patche that approximate a cloud of points projecting them on a direction. But you must select only groups of 'projectable' points of a relativelly smooth region. Sometimes scanners include software to create triangles that connect the cloud of points, these triangles could aid you to create smooth surfaces from them e.g. for simple cases can try Geometry->Create->Geometry from mesh... or maybe you can directly work with the triangle mesh creating pseudo-surfaces with Geometry->Creata->Surface mesh... that can be used as volume boundary and re-meshed, also for simple cases. Send by: Yiyu chen Dear all, I’m trying to export the result of a frame design program to GID using GIDPost. The reuslt generally composes of many irregular-spaced output station results for each frame element(linear element in GID). My current understanding from the GIDPost manual is that the output station for linear element must be evenly distributed. Is this correct? If so, is there any other way to go around this restriction? Thanks for your help in advance. Regards Chen -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Send by: zwozniak at cogeco.ca Hi All, I have a 3D oval shaped model and I am using mesh with quadratic elements. For such a geometry GiD generates elements with curved edges. How to generate mesh with quadratic elements having straight edges? Regards, Zdzislaw [GiDlist] quadratic elements with straight edges
Send by: Enrique Escolano This option not exists internally, but we provided a predefined macro that do exactly this (move quadratic nodes to align them) from Tcl scripting. You could enable this macro with: Utilities->Tools->Macros... select the 'Align Quadratic Nodes' macro, press the 'right-mouse' button to open the contextual menu and use 'In toolbar', then its icon will be shown in the 'macros toolbar'. Press this button and all quadratic nodes will be aligned. Enrique Escolano ----- Original Message ----- From: <zwozniak at cogeco.ca> To: <... Send by: Miguel A. Pasenau de Riera Hello, just after doing the contour fill of the result you want to see, right clicking over the graphical window, select "Label-->Select-->.Res" and select the nodes whose results you want to display. The label will display the value of the result on that node. If you the change the result used for the contour fill, the label will change accordingly. best reagrds, Miguel Pasenau De: gidlist-bounces at listas.cimne.upc.edu [mailto:gidlist-bounces at listas.cimne.upc.edu] En nombre de Farzam-Student,STW, Arash Enviado el: miércoles, 02 de noviembre de 2011 19:04 Para: ... Send by: Enrique Escolano You must simply apply mesh sizes to geometric entities (lines, surfaces,...) Mesh->Unstructured->Assign size on ... and generate a unstructured mesh of quads must set also to geometric surfaces that you want this kind of element, else you will obtain triangles. (Mesh->Element type->Quadrilateral, and select the surfaces) You can also generate structured meshes of quadrilaterals, but then the number of divisions is propagated between neighbor surfaces, you only can concentrate elements in some part of the lines, but maintaning the number of divisions.
